Good Company

The Bible speaks to those that we keep close to us. The company we keep. In essence, it tells us to only keep good company. Those to whom we are closest must have good character. How does this relate to life?

I think of this when trials arise. Sometimes we don’t even know we’re going through trial at the time. Have you ever completed a test that you didn’t even know you were taking? Did the experience raise your awareness? Did you consider other “tests” as a result?

This happens to us all the time. Sometimes the best test is the “pop” test. Often we unwittingly test ourselves. Other times, those closest to us test us. Still other times, the Almighty tests us. Yes, God does send trials our way. When He does this, though, He will also give us the tools needed to complete the test. It could be the courage to try something new. Or the strength and agility to complete a task. Often though, He will make available to us, those people that can help us. Regardless, He himself is always there for us.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8,

As humans, we tend to be rather slow and dimwitted. Even the smartest of us get so caught up in the moment that we don’t realize what we have. It may take us days, weeks, or even years later to understand a situation. We look back and say, “I didn’t know it then, but God had His hand in that situation. He walked me through it when I never could have done it.

He has recently placed it on my heart to evaluate the people in my life. What does my testimony say to them? How does their testimony affect me? I have learned (sometimes the hard way) that the people that I am around adversely affect my mood, attitude, work ethic, etc but being someone that wants to please people I find it difficult to just put people away so what does one do? The world constantly bombards us with negativity. I want to be a positive force combating that negativity so I found myself consulting God’s Word which has quite a lot to say about this!

Lessons in Scripture

  • 1 Corinthians 15:33 – “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”
  • Proverbs 12:26 – “The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.”
  • Proverbs 12:30 – “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
  • Proverbs 27:17 – “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

The message is clear: surround yourself with good people because bad influences will corrupt not only you, but your thoughts as well. However, rather than completely abandoning those bad influences, a good person can also influence those “bad seeds” for the good as well. So, those of us that live in this world connected through countless means of social media we need to find a way to block those corrupting influences while also providing a beacon of light to the persons spreading the corruption. We need to ignore the negativity and counteract that negativity with the positive message of the Lord’s grace and mercy! For each of us, this is going to be different, but we must find a way to keep the bad out our own minds while finding a way to put the good into the minds of others!

This is still a struggle of mine. So I sometimes just have to ignore posts that I find raising my blood pressure or negatively influencing my attitude, but we can combat that by going out to His Word, finding other sources to refute the negative sources, or calling on him in prayer! When all else fails, stepping back from the situation for a bit is always a good idea, but anything is better than letting the evil one gain a foothold in our heart or mind!
